My Story
Hey, I'm Luis, and I am from Houston, Texas, specifically the lively east side. Since I was a kid, I've been known for getting into trouble, but I like to think of it as good trouble. My mom has a funny story about how I once took apart a brand-new CD player to fix an old stereo. Long story short, I ended up with neither!
But my curiosity for technology and the arts never waned. When I got my hands on a computer, I dove into editing software, adding cartoons to pictures and exploring all sorts of creative stuff. High school opened up a whole new world for me—I discovered how media works and how to use it to tell stories.
Being a first-generation American with Mexican roots, I'm passionate about supporting people of color. Whether it's through breaking language barriers through visuals or using film to share important stories, I'm all in.
After high school, I landed an internship at Houston Community College, where I learned the ropes of graphic design and marketing. It was there that I fell even more in love with the technical side of media.
After a few years, one of the biggest accomplishments for my community was able to work with Furr High School, my alma mater implementing a 10 million grant called XQ America (2018-2023). Through the grant, the creation of HTX Voices was established under the Career Technical Education Media Pathway. We established paid multimedia internship programming and trainings with youth teaching them the ins and outs of production. We captured the essence of our community through storytelling.
I have also been able to lead and continue to work with a number of partners from local, state, and federal such as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Student Conservation Association, HISD Schools such as Holland Middle School, Pleasantville Elementary, R.P. Harris, Texas A&M University and U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Currently, I am a collaborator and founding and standing member of HTX Voices and partner with Furr High School.
My mission has always been clear: to use media to make a positive impact. Whether it's through design, film, or community projects, I'm all about making a difference.
